The right scent can help communicate a product’s purpose, reinforce a brand identity, elevate the sensorial experience, and make an everyday routine more memorable. But choosing a fragrance is about more than simply selecting something that smells good.

Botanical extracts have long been used in skin care, hair care, and personal care formulations because plants naturally contain compounds associated with a wide range of topical benefits.

As personal care continues to become more science-driven, the distinction between botanical extracts, active ingredients, and functional ingredients will become increasingly useful for formulators looking to select the right type of ingredient for the right product story.

Odor neutralizers are ingredients or technologies designed to reduce, capture, transform, or otherwise interfere with malodor molecules rather than relying only on fragrance to cover them.

Microbiome-friendly skin care is generally designed with consideration for the natural community of microorganisms that live on the skin. Rather than viewing all microorganisms as something that needs to be removed, this approach recognizes that a diverse and balanced skin microbiome plays an important role in maintaining healthy-looking, resilient skin.

Fragrance is no longer reserved for perfume bottles and special occasions. Increasingly, consumers are encountering sophisticated scent experiences throughout their everyday routines — from body washes and deodorants to shampoos, lotions, hand soaps, laundry products, and home care.

Functional fragrances take that relationship a step further. Rather than being created only to smell appealing, a functional fragrance is intentionally designed with a specific purpose in mind, such as supporting relaxation, focus, energy, calm, comfort, or emotional well-being.

Fermentation sits at the intersection of several important areas of personal care innovation: natural ingredients, botanical extracts, biotechnology, microbiome-conscious skin care, and postbiotic ingredients.

In celebration of International Fragrance Day, and as we honor 50 years of Carrubba, we turned to the people who know fragrance best, our perfumery team.

Each was asked to reflect on their favorite creation from their time here, revealing the stories, inspiration, and emotion behind the scents they’ve brought to life.
